Adobe Flash PLayer

Is it necessary to uninstall Adobe Flash ver 10.1 before installing 10.2?

My thanks.....miki

Only run the Flash uninstaller if there's some trouble with Flash. Normally not necessary for an update.

In the past I have used both methods.

Let Adobe install the new over the old, and usually that's fine.

On occasion though when I have had Flash plugin problems I have used Adobe's own Flash uninstaller to uninstall Flash, then I have rebooted the system, just to update the registry and system files, then installed the new version.

But I would try the upgrade first. Let Adobe install over the old one.

...in my case, we don't let Flash automatically update.. Instead, we use the standalone, manual installer to keep Flash current.. Therefore, our best option is to uninstall the old, then reinstall the new..

I've just performed such on about 50 - 60 computers here.. along with updating Adobe Reader and the Shockwave player.

It's your choice.

Hope this helps.

Now I have to make a decision happy......miki

.... and tested the version was properly installed on Adobe website, but the plugin is 10.1.102.64. Is that right?

Miki

Reply 6 : Adobe Flash PLayer

Yes, that's the same plugin that I have.

Mark

No where do I see 10.1.102.64. confused

Both IE and FF indicate 10.2.152.26, which I believed to be correct. Now you both have me questioning myself. sad

My guess would be you DO have the new version of Flash Player installed, but also have an older ActiveX/plug-in installed, which was not removed.

Go to CWindowsSystem32MacromediaFlash. Do you see the previous Active X (along with the new one) installed in the folder? I believe the date would have been around 11/5/10. And IF I remember correctly, the older file name is "Flash10l.ocx".

Better yet. Run a scan with Secunia's Online Software Inspector, instead.

Keep in mind, I said the above was a guess. Any theories, Mark?

I don't have a file named CWindowsSystem32MacromediaFlash, but Control PanelPrograms and Features shows I do have the new Flash Player installed and the plugin as 10.1.102.64.

My Firefox add-on for Shockwave Flash is at 10.2.152.26

Interestingly, underneath those words (Shockwave Flash 10.2.152.26) is Shockwave Flash 10.2.r152.

I wonder what that signifies.

In Windows 7 the Macromedia folder can be found in the WindowsWOW64 folder, and is called Macromed. Inside the Flash folder my ActiveX plugin, (FlashUtil10m_ActiveX.exe) was updated Feb 11, but my Firefox plugin, (FlashUtilm_Plugin.exe), is dated today.

Miki if your Adobe hasn't updated yet, you can check for updated immediately if you wish. In Firefox goto Tools > Add-ons, highlight the Plugins tab, and then click the "Find Updates" button, although Rod's way is just as good.

Mark

Reply 10 : Adobe Flash PLayer

there is no Macromed file....Did I mention that Flash Player verified I successfully installed Flash Player (I verified several times happy

BTW "Shockwave Flash object 10.2.152.26" appears in my Add-ons.

is C: Windows SysWOW64 Macromed Flash, but if you now have the 10.2.152.26 version, then I would say you're done, and good to go, happy

The 10.1.102.64 was never totally uninstalled. That was the old version verifed here on November 4, 2010

Just my 2 cents here but by far the eaiest way to do these flash updates it with the direct download links.

Direct Download link for Firefox, Safari, Opera
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

Direct Download for IE users.
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe

Those links are ALWAYS good, Adobe will put the new version on them whenever one is released. The best way is to download and save them. You MUST have whichever browser you are updating closed when you install it or you will get remnants like you have now. These downloads both uninstall the old one and install the new one. If you check the folder that Carol refers to and/or use the OSI after you update, you will fine everything to be good.

I have been doing it this way for a few years anow and it is works very well and only takes a minute or 2 to do all browsers.

To determine the actual plugin version of Firefox, if that's what you're running, then type: about:plugins in the address bar, then press the Enter key. You should be able to scroll down to the "Shockwave Flash" entry and see the version number you have installed.

Hope this helps.

I went to Windows/system32/Macromed and i had both 9b and the latest in there!! secuniaPSI 2.0 missed it, So I had my installer in my flashdrive and removed it the reinstalled the correct version. Thee later versions have install and uninstall in it. Darrell

....I have "Flash10m.ocx" on IE8 Add-ons

...and the Add-ons list Shockwave Flash Object only and the version 10.2.152.26.

....it seems you and I are both in the same situation with an old plugin. What is your plan to correct the issue? happy

Miki

Reply 19 : Adobe Flash PLayer

Cross posting seems to have sorted both of us out though, happy

Plans. Usually I am a 'wait and see what mess I get into', sort of person. I would like to change, but I think I will.... wait and see.

Do I use the flash player uninstaller and remove flash player activeX and plugin, or can I just remove plugin......?.....miki

Reply 21 : Adobe Flash PLayer

I thought you had upgraded already. My apologies.

It will be quicker just to let Adobe update. Mine updated with no problem and with no need for me to uninstall anything first. I know others do it differently, and for good reason, but yours is a new system and honestly I don't expect any problems.

If you use IE 8 and not Firefox there is no "Find Updates" in IE 8's Manage add-ons options, so either visit the web site Rod gave, or let Adobe notify you from your own computer.

When I said cross-posted, I meant we both posted around the same time. My post is #12, (currently), here;

The one listed as "Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX" is the one used by IE8. The one listed as "Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin" is used by Mozila, Firefox, Opera, etc. If you don't have one of those, then uninstall the Plugin only.. The ActiveX will continue to work for IE.

Hope this helps.

How weird -- I do not have Mozila, Firefox, Opera, etc installed.

Can I uninstall plug in from Control Panel and not use the Flash Player uninstaller cuz it probably would uninstall the keeper activeX along with the plugin.

Miki

Reply 25 : Adobe Flash PLayer

Just uninstall the plugin from the Control Panel/Programs and Features section.. Doing so will leave the "ActiveX" for Internet Explorer.. You can test IE by going to the page below and Flash should still work after removing the plugin.

Hope this helps.

Using Control Panel, I uninstalled the older Adobe Flash Player plug in I did not need. The Adobe Flash Player ActiveX was not affected and was verified as still working OK.

I forgot to mention Adobe snuck in the Shockwave player when I updated Flash Player yesterday. I should have used the standalone method you suggested, but lost patience trying to locate it on Adobe so took the easy way out.
