HELP....advice on graphics/photo software needed!!

i'm interested in purchasing a graphics software that will allow me to manipulate and create backgrounds for cards, labels, etc. is there a program that does this along with photo and clip art editing? i have lots of creative ideas, but i'm tired of being limited to windows. WHERE DO I BEGIN...PLEASE HELP!

i don't have any design program...i just sit and make do with word 07; i know that there has to be something out there to make it easier to create those cutesy designs, backgrounds, frames, and art. i just don't know exactly where to begin looking. i don't want to design web pages, but just wanting to start small and create cards, etc.

But your post wrote something about not limited to Windows. Maybe you meant Word?
