What kind of headphones would you get for your laptop? What kind of criteria must it meet? Why?
Around-ear? On-ear? In-ear? Wireless? Foldable?

I feel like I'm being really repetitive but everything really depends on your needs. I don't really like IEMs though I will use them while I'm out since they're compact and very small, plus they block a lot of external noise. For my own room, I prefer open circumaurals or supraaurals for music. I'd only use wireless when I'm far away from the TV and don't want to disturb my family at night. I have an external DAC/amp connected to my laptop and really like the Alessandro MS1i for it's low price and excellent sound reproduction (flac audio).

I personally also dont like In Ear type, but some do, i prefer for my laptop foldable heaphones like Audio-Technica ATH-M50S or Sennheiser HD280Pro, there some newers like HD380Pro that come with its own hard case and fold to sides of the ear cups, if you have the space and willing to carry something a little bigger i would go that route, but if you find in ears conforable, i would look into Ultimate Ears.

"What would you get"...
What do YOU want?
YOU need to decide what type of headphone you want and then you can debate the pros and cons. I don't like large earphones, I cannot wear earbuds - but I'm fine with IEMs and really like the Sennheiser IE8 I have been using for nearly two years now. It might be different for you, it might be the same.
-> And then again, what are you looking for? I'd prefer clarity over bass, other people don't care about clarity.
Next, wired vs. wireless - I wouldn't recommend anybody to go wireless, the audio quality will be worse compared to wired headphones, although I am sure modern models are better than older ones. However, there might be situations where wired headphones are very impractical.
Decide what YOU want and then ask for opinion on what is best.
For IEMs I can highly suggest you read this review:

What is your budget and will you be playing on it?

-> If you want IEMs asking for recommendations around IEMs makes a lot of sense.
It depends on what YOU like.
Now you could phrase a question like for example "I have been using over-ear headphones and am interested in IEMs", or "I use IEMs would I gain anything from over-ear headphones".
In this case we have something to go on.
But coming "from nowhere" you gain very little from what other people use.
As I mentioned earlier, I cannot wear earbuds - I can wear IEMs. There is little point if we tell you to wear IEMs if they hurt your ears for example.

Everyone has their preference of headphones. I for example prefer circumaural and superaural headphones for most of my listening pleasure. IEMs aren't suited for long periods of times, or for me.
As DetlevCM said, we need to know your preference so that this thread can go somewhere.

Using ATH-AD900 on bloody Realtek HD audio at home - sounds surprisingly warm, but I'd generally say that they're not everyone's cup of tea.

As others have said, your own preferences are the most important. If you don't like IEM's, then the best IEM's in the world will still not be good for you.
Your budget is another thing to consider. If you have $100 to spend, then recommendations of $200-300 headphones will not help you. Also, do you have/intend to buy any amplifiers/DAC's, or just use the audio output directly from your laptop?
Personally, I can't stand IEM's, earbuds or supra-aural headphones. I pretty much only enjoy circumaural headphones (cups completely surrounding the ear). I have the JVC HA-RX900, and I highly recommend them for around $50.
