Luckily, you don't need access to the BIOS to change the RAM.

In fact I did look at this model laptop and it has no bios screen to allow that change.
You may be thinking about those motherboards which you built desktops from?

Most folk would never look at such things. Laptops are for the most part a lot more locked down. More so than desktops by same makers!

Under normal circumstances, no bios lock be needed, while this is a laptop, then you the user/owner has done so. Unless, that is required to be unlocked to install ram, which I don't think ever was the case. Adding ram needs no input to the bios, its "auto-setting" and will report that it has been installed. Just be sure you install the correct type and amount supported. Alas, having matched or very similar ram sticks is best, so explain what you have. The website: http//:www.crucial.com and look-up your model# PC and review what they suggest. Understand, the system may only support in each ram slot a certain amount of ram being present. Also, it maybe best to review what if any bios updates are available for your Compaq model# in order to best accommodate any possible ram fixes(review them). Last, I again mention, there needn't be any manual bios changes to install ram.
